God Saw You Getting Tired

Most popular version

God saw you getting tired
and a cure was not to be
so He put His arms around you
and whispered, “Come to Me.”

With tearful eyes we watched you
and saw you pass away
and although we love you dearly
we could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating
hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.

Version 3

God saw that she was getting tired,
A cure was not to be.
So he put His arms around her
And whispered, ”Come with Me.”
With tearful eyes, we watched her suffer.
And saw her fade away.
Although we loved her dearly,
We could not make her stay.
A golden heart stopped beating.
Hard working hands to rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes ”the best”

Version 2

God saw you getting tired,
When a cure was not to be.
So He wrapped his arms around you,
and whispered, “come to me.”
You didn’t deserve what you went through,
So He gave you rest.

God’s garden must be beautiful,
He only takes the best
And when I saw you sleeping,
So peaceful and free from pain
I could not wish you back
To suffer that again.

Frances and Kathleen Coelho – authors God Saw You Getting Tired
by: Kathleen Coelho

This was written in 1939 by Frances M. Coelho for her mother, Frances Medeiros. She took it out again on the 1st anniversary of my father’s death. I got to change 1-1/2 lines, so she wanted my name on the copyright too. I loved that. Because so many people were taking credit for the the authorship, luckily, Mom had the forethought to do a poor man’s copyright, back in 1939! That is the only reason she was able to get this copyright – a postal stamp with the date on the unopened envelope. The Copyright of this poem belongs to Frances and Kathleen Coelho.
